35mm Slide Scanning Services

How We Work

Our "white glove" service is what it says.  At no time will we handle your original film, slides, or prints with bare hands.  Skin oils are very unkind to film, slides and photos, and we take every precaution to make sure we do not introduce any oils or fingerprints to your precious media.  Please understand that we receive materials in all conditions, both good and bad, but we do everything we can to make sure that we do not add to the problem.  We evaluate each frame of film for dust, then clean each with a non-abrasive micro-cloth in addition to using filtered, compressed air.  Once viewed on a light table, we make a preliminary evaluation with respect to color balance, saturation, scratches, etc.  We will do a pre-scan to set parameters to ensure the best possible scan based on the condition of the material and the service options requested.

Did we mention that your original negatives, slides, film and prints are processed individually by hand?  We do not use automated feed adapters in order to avoid risk to your materials caused by equipment jams and malfunctions.

Our 35mm slide scans include:

  • Free Digital ICE (not available with monochrome or Kodachrome films)
  • Free cropping
  • Free rotation
  • Free basic color correction
  • Free CD/DVDs and case. Additional cost for extra copies.

The Equipment

As already mentioned, we use only Nikon Super Coolscan 5000ED for all 2x2" mounted slides.  These include 35mm, Super 35mm, 126, 110, 127, 127 SuperSlide.  These scanners are connected to the latest Apple computers and monitors.  Our monitors are calibrated each week to ensure there is no drift to color profiles, which allows us to provide consistent results.  We scan at resolutions from 2000ppi to 4000ppi, depending on your requirements, to produce either JPEG or TIFF files.

How To Package Your Slides Before Shipment

  1. If you would like your slides scanned in any particular order, please make that known to us.  You will need to physically number each slide so they can be scanned and filed to CD/DVD in that same order.
  2. If you want folders created on the CD/DVDs for organizational purposes, please group the slides in the numerical order you desire.  For instance, you can say that slides 1 thru 25 go to file #1, slides 26 thru 50 go to file #2, etc.  Package your slides in the groupings you require using rubber bands, zip-lock bags, or some other secure method.
  3. You may send your slides in their original boxes or in archival plastic storage pages.
  4. Do NOT send slides in any type projector slide tray, carousel, magazine, cube or metal holders.
  5. Take care to package your important slides well.  Please put them in zip-lock bags to protect them from dust and moisture prior to boxing them for shipment.

As already mentioned, we use only Nikon Super Coolscan 5000ED for all 35mm negative film (color and black & white).

  1. Please make sure that your 35mm negative film strips are 2-6 frames in length. Strips longer than 6 frames must be cut in order to be scanned. We do not scan single 35mm frames. We also do not scan uncut roll film at this time.
  2. Mark clearly which frames you want scaned by using a hole punch to carefully cut a slight circular indent on the film edge or mark on the plastic archival page itself using a soft black marker or grease pencil.  If you'd rather, you can just put a piece of tape or label on the page in the location of the frame(s) you want scanned.
  3. You may send film in plastic archival sheet but we do not guarantee that the film will be returned in the same positions on the page.  You may also send film loose in envelopes but we do not recommend this as film can scratch by the constant motion of the strips rubbing against each other in transit.
  4. Sorry, we do not process film.

Our large format scans include:

  • Free cropping
  • Free rotation
  • Free basic color correction
  • Free CD/DVDs and case. Additional cost for extra copies.

The Equipment

For large format 4x5 inch scanning, we use the Epson Perfection V750-M Pro Dual Lens Scanner.  The V750-M Pro provides exceptional quality for a flat-bed scanner, producing remarkable tonal range and shadow detail with 4.0Dmax density.  It provides fluid mount capability to effectively remove scratches and reduce grain from black and white negatives. This scanner is connected to the latest Apple computers and monitors.  Our monitors are calibrated each week to ensure there is no drift to color profiles, which allows us to provide consistent results.  We scan at resolutions from 500ppi to 2000ppi, depending on your requirements, to produce either JPEG or TIFF files.

How To Package Your 4x5 Large Format Negatives Before Shipment

Please take care to sandwich your 4x5 negatives between heavy cardboard, artboard, masonite or anything that will prevent bending.  A creased 4x5 inch negative will not scan well, so please take extra measures to ensure that your materials are well protected.  Separate each negative or transparency using glassine sleeves (preferable) or sheets of lintless paper, or envelopes.
If you want folders created on the CD/DVDs for organizational purposes, please group your 4x5's in the order you desire and we will be glad to comply.

A  Word About CDs/DVDs

  • We only use quality media (CDs/DVDs) to entrust your valuable scans to.  We never use bargain or off-brands, but only buy media from reliable, industry accepted sources that adhere to the highest technical standards.
  • Additionally, we do not use adhesive CD labels as they have been shown to be detrimental to the integrity of the disc.  In time, the chemicals in the adhesive can work their way into the data layer contaminating your information and rendering them difficult, if not impossible, to read.  For the same reason, we do not use ink markers of any kind, on the surface of the disc.
